Built circa 1857, 454 Greene Street was the home for many years of Augusta attorney William Raymond McLaws, brother of the famous Confederate general, Lafayette McLaws. A later occupant was A. Smith Irwine, Secretary-Treasurer of the Georgia Chemical Works, one of Augusta’s large industries in the late 19th Century. This fine Italianate style house is notable for its bracketed pediment forming the third story, the hooded second story windows and the handsome verandah with arched stretchers between the stylized posts with decorative molding.
