Erected in 1994 by the State to Georgia to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of Augusta’s greatest benefactors of the 19th Century. Mrs. Tubman used her husband’s fortune for the benefit of many Augusta causes, including building First Christian Church, assisting her slaves with resettlement in Liberia, bringing Augusta’s first ice machine to relieve wounded soldiers during the Civil War and providing Tubman High School for girls. This marker is erected near the site of her home.
