The cornerstone for this granite obelisk was dedicated on July 4, 1848 in honor of the three Signers of the Declaration of Independence from Georgia: Button Gwinnett, Lyman Hall and George Walton. Both Walton and Hall were reinterred from their original places of burial and placed here under the monument. Gwinnett is believed to have been buried in Savannah near where he died in a duel with General Lachlan McIntosh. The monument was completed by 1854 when former President Millard Fillmore visited the city and mentioned it in his speech.
